We are responsible for all of our emotions. When dealing with anger, this is especially challenging; it is so tempting to say and believe “they made me do it” or “they made me angry.” Anger actually signals an unmet expectation within ourselves. It can serve as a valuable “warning light” to alert us to what is happening within and around ourselves. When we do not use anger as a tool to “wake us up,” we will slip into obsessive thinking and resentments. Hence the adage “expectations are resentments waiting to happen.” Truly, learning to utilize our expectations, our anger, and our resentments in helpful ways will lead to happier living, deeper connections, and stronger love.
