When we think of fantasy, usually we think of fictional stories and happy endings. However, fantasy also includes any time we perceive reality in an altered way or through a lens of a certain desired outcome. Whenever the reality in front of us becomes unpleasant, uncomfortable or painful, we have the ability to “change” it or escape it through fantasy. When we use fantasy as a coping strategy or pattern of thinking, to keep the discomfort of reality from touching us, we live in a cycle of distraction and denial, and we disconnect from reality, others, self and our God or Higher Power.
